Urolithin A and Healthy Aging: Benefits, Evidence and Limits

What human research suggests about urolithin A, muscle function and healthy aging—and what has not been proven.

Reviewed August 7, 2026. Urolithin A is often marketed as a longevity ingredient because it is being studied in mitochondrial and muscle-aging research. No human trial has shown that a urolithin A supplement extends lifespan, reverses aging or prevents age-related disease.

Why researchers study urolithin A

Urolithin A is produced when certain gut microbes metabolize ellagitannins found in foods such as pomegranates and some nuts and berries. Preclinical studies suggest it can activate pathways involved in mitophagy—the recycling of damaged mitochondria. Researchers are testing whether that biology can translate into useful functional outcomes in people.

What the human evidence supports

Small randomized trials lasting about four months have reported signals in muscle endurance, strength and blood biomarkers at daily doses of 500 mg or 1,000 mg. Results are mixed: in one older-adult trial, the primary outcomes of six-minute walk distance and maximal ATP production did not differ significantly from placebo, although secondary endurance measures improved. In a middle-aged trial, some strength measures improved, while the primary peak-power endpoint did not.

These studies do not establish an anti-aging effect. They studied specific populations, doses and single-ingredient preparations for a limited time. Larger, independent and longer-term trials are needed, including research in more diverse populations.

Five practical takeaways

  1. Mechanism is not outcome. Mitophagy research does not prove longer life or a guaranteed change you can feel.
  2. Evidence is population-specific. Results in older or untrained middle-aged adults may not apply to everyone.
  3. Formulas differ. A gummy containing CoQ10 or trans-resveratrol is not identical to the single-ingredient products used in trials.
  4. Basics matter more. Sleep, physical activity, a balanced diet, medical care and avoiding tobacco have much broader evidence for healthy aging.
  5. Check safety first. Discuss supplements with a healthcare professional if you take medication, manage a condition, are pregnant or nursing, or are preparing for surgery.
